Podcasting originated from the concept of "audioblogging" in the 1980s and evolved significantly in the early 2000s with advancements in internet technology and portable digital devices. The term "podcast," combining "iPod" and "broadcast," was coined by journalist Ben Hammersley in 2004. Around this time, software developer Dave Winer and former MTV host Adam Curry played pivotal roles in creating the first podcasting tools, such as RSS feeds with audio enclosures and the iPodder application. Apple's integration of podcasts into iTunes in 2005 marked a turning point, making podcasts more accessible to mainstream audiences. Although growth was initially slow, the release of Serial in 2014 showcased the medium's potential for compelling storytelling, propelling podcasting into mainstream entertainment. Today, podcasts cover diverse topics, attract millions of listeners globally, and have become a powerful medium for both independent creators and major media organizations. |
